Ness Cove – 60 minutes

A secluded, rugged beach backed by dramatic red cliffs, accessed via an original smugglers tunnel. Children will love it and dogs are permitted on the beach year-round. There are yellow buoys in the sea that create a safe swimming zone where no boats can enter. Please note, however, that no lifeguards patrol this beach. Ness Cove is a favourite amongst Devon locals for its unique entrance and is surprisingly spacious despite being the smallest beach on the list.

Slapton Sands – 75 minutes

Slapton Sands is an incredibly versatile beach. With the RNLI patrolling for safety and quick access to nearby refreshment facilities, it’s no wonder this is a family favourite. Slapton also prides itself on being a dog-friendly beach. What makes Slapton Sands stand out however is its rather unique history. On the 28th April 1944, an estimated 700 US serviceman lost their lives on this three-mile stretch of shingle when German E-boats attacked their D-day rehearsals. A Sherman tank at the north end of the beach commemorates them.

Bantham Beach – 90 minutes

This long and sandy beach offers shallow waters perfect for children’s safe swimming when the tide is out. Wetsuits outnumber bikinis on South Devon’s best known surf beach. Bantham offers a variety of activities to take part in, such as surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and Bantham even has its own surfing academy! With so much to do, this is one of our favourite beaches near Dartmoor.

South Milton Sands – 90 minutes

A beautiful beach for a traditional holiday. Ideal for rock pooling and beachcombing. It’s also the perfect location for snorkelling, scuba diving, and windsurfing. To add to the appeal, a local water sports equipment provider is on the beach to rent you any equipment you need. The beachside café is the perfect spot to watch a beautiful sunset with drink in hand after a long day in the sun. South Milton Sands has all the ingredients you need for a perfect day at the beach.

Woolacombe – 90 minutes

Woolacombe in North Devon is an epic, three-mile swathe of sand which has oodles of space for surfers, swimmers and sunbathers, as well as blue flag status. This award-winning beach near Dartmoor is nestled in-between Morte Point and Baggy point and is renowned for its cleanliness and facilities. You can also bring your trusty companion with you, as Woolacombe is dog-friendly year around. However, there are some very minor restrictions during the main season, so be sure to check out when and where the restrictions are in place.
