Haytor and Hound Tor
Experience the iconic granite tors of Dartmoor on this walk that connects Haytor and Hound Tor. Starting at the National Park Visitor Centre, ascend to Haytor and enjoy the views over South Devon and the coast. The path descends into a valley, passing through woodland before ascending to Hound Tor, known for its rock formations and the nearby ruins of a cluster of 13th century longhouses. This walk is incredibly popular as a workout walk, due to its uphill nature and distance of roughly 6.2 miles. This Dartmoor walk has plenty of picturesque spots to rest and enjoy the scenery.
Lydford Gorge
Explore the deepest gorge in the Southwest of England with this walk through Lydford Gorge. Begin at the National Trust car park and follow the path along the River Lyd. There are two walking trails that you can take into the woodland. During your exploration, you’ll find the renowned 30m-high Whitelady Waterfall. The route has easy and more challenging sections, but the Gorge is a must-visit due to it hosting a temperate rainforest, a globally rare habitat.
Bellever Forest and Bellever Tor
For a family-friendly adventure, head to Bellever Forest and Bellever Tor. The trails through Bellever Forest are clear and well-maintained, making the trails very easy to navigate. The views from the top are a reward for the effort, with vistas over the moorland and forests, you can even see all the way over to Princetown. This Dartmoor walk combines shaded woodland paths with open moorland, perfect for all ages. If you’re lucky, you may see some of the deer that inhabit the forest.
Wistmans Wood
Taking its name from a small oak wood, Wistmans Wood has always been a highly recommended spot for walking, as well as one of Dartmoor’s most enchanting spots. Start your walk from the car park at Two Bridges and follow the path alongside the West Dart River. This walk is perfect for families and those looking for a relaxing stroll. As you approach Wistman's Wood, you'll be greeted by ancient, twisted oak trees covered in moss and lichen, creating a magical atmosphere. Please be aware that this forest is home to many rare species vegetation, so be sure to walk around the woods on the designated paths.
Burrator Reservoir
Burrator Reservoir is a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike. This circular route starts from the reservoir car park and follows well-kept paths and quiet lanes, making it suitable for all ages and abilities. The trail loops around the reservoir, offering serene views of the water, surrounded by woodland. There are plenty of spots to rest at, with opportunities to spot wildlife such as birds and deer. This easy, family-friendly Dartmoor walk provides a peaceful escape into nature, with the reservoir's calm waters creating a tranquil setting.
