Historic Days Out

With a vast selection of mighty castles and stately homes in the surrounding area of Dartmoor, we are spoiled for choice. Take a journey back through time with our recommendations of the very best historic days out.

Castle Drogo – 20 minutes

Constructed in the 20th century, Castle Drogo is amongst the last of the great castles to be constructed in England. Acquired by the National Trust in 1974, the castle once was home to renowned retail entrepreneur Julius Drewe and his descendants.  Situated above the Teign Gorge, Castle Drogo’s beauty is enhanced with its many wonderous views over Dartmoor.

Bradley Manor – 45 minutes

Bradley Manor is a quaint but secluded house. Standing in the unlikely woodland and meadows of central Newton Abbot, the house offers a glimpse of medieval history with feature such as the original ceilings and small cat holes. Bradley Manor is still a family home, and you get a real sense of that as you explore the house. You may even see a family member welcoming you to its car park.

Powderham Castle – 45 minutes

One of Devon’s must-see locations is Powderham Castle. Located in a unique, picturesque setting just outside Exeter, beside Exe Estuary. Powderham Castle was built as a place for the local community to come together, frequently hosting a variety of large green-field events such as Food Festivals and Classic Car Shows. Built in 1391 by Sir Philip Courtenay, Powderham Castle claims six centuries worth of history. Although it appears different today to how it would have originally looked, the spirit of the castle and what it stands for remains.

Buckfast Abbey – 50 minutes

Nestled in a tranquil haven on the edge of Dartmoor, along the banks of the River Dart, Buckfast Abbey is the only English medieval monastery to have been restored and used again for its original purpose. Today, visitors will often see monks from the monastery, as they walk around the pretty gardens.

Tintagel Castle – 75 minutes

Our furthest recommendation is the fantastical Tintagel Castle. With its spectacular location on Cornwall’s dramatic and windswept Atlantic coastline, Tintagel is a place of magic and myth where the legend of King Arthur was born. The castle is incredibly unique both in its structure and due to the fact it held no strategic or military value. Richard, Earl of Cornwall’s inspiration to build it appears to be solely the legend of King Arthur. Our furthest recommendation is the fantastical Tintagel Castle.
