Local Villages and Towns in Dartmoor
While most people visit Dartmoor to walk its wild moors and experience its expansive vistas, its towns and villages shouldn’t be overlooked. With many steeped in history and fascinating facts, Dartmoor towns and villages offer a charming day out. Explore their charity shops, artisan food and drink or one of the many fine country pubs. Here’s our guide to the best.
Chagford – 45 minutes
Chagford is one of four ancient stannary towns that exist in Devon. With Dartmoor having a rich history of tin-mining, Chagford was a hub for the weighing and valuing tin. With a beautiful portfolio of old thatched granite buildings and many secrets waiting to be uncovered, its clear to see why Chagford is one of the most popular towns in Dartmoor to visit.
Tavistock – 45 minutes
Tavistock speaks for itself, as it is the only town in Devon to hold world heritage status and former home of the legendary Sir Francis Drake. Filled with a variety of wholesome shops that reflect its history as a market hub, it’s easy for the hours to fly past wandering around the town. There’s no shortage of activities in Tavistock, the eastern gateway to the World Heritage Site of Dartmoor. Explore the sights whilst canoeing down the River Tamar, or for the history buffs, wander around the Dartmoor Prison Museum and learn about its fascinating history. Whatever you decide, Tavistock caters to all.
Totnes – 60 minutes
Totnes has a reputation for its alternative vibe, where embracing organic, ethical, and fair-trade practises is the standard rather than the exception. It’s the home of the Transition Town movement and is proud to be a little different. Totnes is said to have its origins in a quote from the founder of the British people, Brutus the Trojan. The quote reads: “Here I stand and here I rest, and this good town shall be called Totnes”. A Norman motte and bailey castle also rests high up in the centre of Totnes, which is perfect for a family picnic out, or if you want to rest for a while before getting back to the exploring. Whatever you’re feeling, Totnes stands amongst some of our favourite towns in Dartmoor.
Princetown – 35 minutes
Located in the heart of Dartmoor, Princetown is a place of rich history and a hub for local walkers and campers to start their Moorland adventure. The town began as a small farming settlement but was later refashioned to accommodate the officers who worked at the infamous Dartmoor Prison, which is still used today. At the back of Princetown lies the old railway that was used by miners to transport granite. The railway provides a great intermediate level walk, and when you return, cafes such as the Old Police Station will be waiting to fill your stomach with its range of hearty meals and drinks.
